We rocked the house

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009 by Rhian

For those of you who missed the Accordion festival, we are sorry.

You missed a rousing set of tunes from the new CD- Skull and Magpies and a Maggified version of “Get Ready”.

The crowd danced, cheered and supported us like no other audience. It was humbling, fun and a musical roller coaster.

OK, as you know, I love all that whistle stuff (hint I am the whistle player) so playing Morning Star in front of such a great crowd was amazing.

We looked the part too- JB had THE suit, Maggie shared her legs, GDub was kilted and I am sure there was some breeze- catch my drift?- and I had a pair of shorts. The added bonus to the shorts was the rhinestone skulls on the back which were displayed throughout our performance and the time we lingered on into the evening.

We were able to be part of a line-up that included Culann’s Hounds and Those Darn Accordions (TDA) who were celebrating 20 years. It was great to hear so many different types of music and feel the energy.

It was a blast- thank you Cotati.

Squeeze It this Weekend 8/22 & 23

Friday, August 21st, 2009 by madmags

cotati accordion festival 09The 19th Annual Cotati Accordion Festival happens in downtown Cotati this weekend. We play Saturday at 4pm and have planned a rowdy good set. We’ll be a full tiding of musical magpies — 9 crazy musicians in all.

I get a little sentimental about this festival because 1991 was the year I fell in love with GDub which was the same year I was given an accordion which also happened to be the first year of the Cotati Accordion Festival.

We went to that first festival and I made my public accordion playing debut playing “Lady of Spain” with dozens of other people in the “Lady-of-Spain-a Ring” which included, as it does every year, a release of white doves. Simply magical.

This year will be one of the best. Check out the line up. There’s Tex-Mex, Gypsy, Cajun/Zydeco, Tango, Basque, Rock, Irish Punk, Virtuosi, and much more. My advice is to come early and stay late, both days! Buy your tickets in advance to save a couple bucks or pay at the gate. Kids under 15 are FREE!

And the 2010 Accordion Babes Pin-up Calendar will be available. This lovely 12×12″ calendar includes 13 squeezebox goddesses in provocative poses and a compilation CD with a tune from each of the lovelies. At only $20 this makes a perfect gift. Several of the babes will be at the festival to sign your calendars. (I’m Ms. October.)

You don’t want to miss this affordable, local, family-friendly, music-rich event.

See ya at the show!

Oh, and we have new red t-shirts with a new design and cool buttons and, of course, our new CD, “Skull & Magpies”.

August Shows Aplenty

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009 by madmags

Enjoy you some Mad Maggies this month.

We just got a call to fill in for a cancellation at the Sonoma County Fair. So we’ll be playing this Wednesday night August 5, 6-9PM. Cotton Candy, Dinosaurs — an exhibit of 45 life size dinosaurs has got to be great! — and the largest themed Flower Show in the United States. Don’t miss it!

Then this Sunday, 8/9, bright and early, we play the Marin Civic Center Farmer’s Market — third largest outdoor market in California. Definitely worth a visit.

Next week Thursday night we play the Downtown San Rafael Market 6-9PM. Pleasant easy-going happening on Fourth Street. We’re in the plaza. Enjoy food and drink in one of the many outside cafes.

And then Saturday 8/22 we play the 19th Annual Cotati Accordion Festival. Our show is at 4PM but you’ll want to come early and stay late. Those Darn Accordions headline Saturday. They are celebrating their 20th! Super line up both days.

Sand Animation by K. Simonova (h/t Wally Sound)

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009 by madmags

An absolute WOW. Wally Sound posted on his facebook this YouTube of Russian sand animation artist, Kseniya Simonova. She appeared on “Ukraine’s Got Talent” and won for this performance. It is mesmerizingly beautiful. I had to pass it along.

Thanks, Wally! (Wally has engineered all of our CDs. He’s the best.)
