Feeling Golden

Saturday, January 31st, 2009 by madmags

RadioIndy has reviewed “Skull & Magpies” and given us a “Gold Artist” award.

Gotta love it.

Here ’tis:

RadioIndy Reviews: Journey through the deep blue seas as you listen to “Skull & Magpies,” a recently released album by The Mad Maggies. This album has a wonderful assortment of musical genres ranging from Celtic to Ska, which produces creative arrangements with bouncy, syncopated beats. Vocals are clean with crisp clarity while the lyrics are sung in ‘buccaneer’ style. This album also has a refreshing variety of instruments that really capture the essence of musical adventures in the high seas. Swing to the accordion as it plays an upbeat rhythm on “Dark Matters.” The instrumental song “Sandglass” features a well-balanced mix between the tuba and the gentle, sweet melody on the whistle. Fans of The Specials and Flogging Molly won’t be disappointed with the colorful seafaring tunes on The Mad Maggies’ “Skull & Magpies.” – Diane and The RadioIndy.com Reviewer Team

The Magnetic Fields

Monday, January 26th, 2009 by johnyblood

When I was a young man and lived in Boston, I played in a band called The Zinnias, later reconfigured as Buffalo Rome and finally as The Magnetic Fields.  I played on the first Magetic Fields album, The Wayward Bus, way back in 1991.  Since then they have become somewhat indie-famous; 69 Love Songs is a classic of sorts. Stephin has asked me to play on their new album, and tomorrow I’ll be recording with them, on  flugelhorn and alto horn as well as tuba.  Since they’re on Nonesuch, this means I’ll be labelmates with the Bulgarian Women’s Radio Choir!

Now I just need to find a Captain Hook outfit for the party on the 7th.

Feeling Feisty – Upcoming Rumbles

Sunday, January 18th, 2009 by madmags

Off to rehearsal shortly to prepare our chops for two, that’s right, two battles of the bands this week.

Wednesday night we are in Mill Valley at a Comcast video production of the “Battle of the Bands – World Music“. Oooh TV exposure for the mad ones! And it’s a FREE, all ages event.

Then on Friday night we look forward to playing with Go Van Gogh for the first time at the Make-Out Room in SF. The bout is entitled “Battle of the Twisted Klezmorim” so you know there will be some body-moving, energetic tunes.

And the winners are … YOU all who get to hear so much good local music!
